"HEYYY! Why are you eating my food?!"Â Â 11 December 2021
 By Dr. Cecilia Chan
-
Dementia is NOT a mental illness…it is a brain disease.
-
People living with dementia suffer from binocular / monocular vision.
-
Don’t startle them or make any sudden movements from the back as they will get shocked and react.
-
Before assisting them, make sure you establish rapport; it’s all about relationship!
-
Use the “HAND UNDERHAND TECHNIQUE” to help them eat their food. Do not force feed!
-
It’s important as informal / formal caregivers, that we give them social space and allow them to take their time.
-
Do not resort to purely medication or restraining approaches.
